With prices for agricultural products of all kinds remaining well below the costs of production, farmers and ranchers are forced to scavenge the roadsides for scraps of Big Macs tossed aside by passing motorists. When winter brings an end to the stream of tourists, many will starve. Misguided attempts to see them through with airlifts of canned pork and beans are certain to end in failure, as anyone who remembers the riots of '47 will attest.
