Spine-Tingling

A Strange-Tripper wondered why yesterday's Opuntia polyacantha is called "Prickly pear". Hey, grab hold of one of these, or trip over it wearing your flip-flops (as I did a few years ago). I guess the Native Americans did have several culinary uses for the plant. According to Montana Plant Life: " Most of the spines were removed by sweeping piles of fruit with sagebrush branches or by burning the spines off. The spines that remained were picked off with fingers protected by deerskin tips." Must be pretty tasty to go through all that, why don't you give it a try? Let me know....
