As with many of their compatriots, these trees out here on the plains took a lethal hit back in January of 1989. Temperatures had been ridiculously high for weeks, lulling the poor things into thinking it was an early spring. Suddenly Old Man Winter awoke from his slumber. Looking around groggily at the sorry state of things, he first unleashed a scouring wind of which the natives still tell stories, then with a vengeance sent the mercury plummeting to -40 within the span of a couple of hours.
