Spring Down Low
These "stiff and pungent, often loosely pubescent, mat-forming" plants which I suspect on no good authority to be Phlox hoodii are having a riot down here right now! White, purple, sometimes blue, their salverform flowers spread a flash of impetuous youth across the prairie while the parent plant hunkers down, stiffly (pungently? pubescently?) preparing for another year of drought.
