Old King Sol
I remember when we all used to laugh and applaud when Mr. Sun, uncertain after a few months' absence, would stumble onto center stage, flexing his muscles and clownishly showing off his strength; a display which Old Man Winter would tolerate for a few days before springing to his feet again and letting us know in no uncertain terms who was still boss.

In these recent times, the laughter rings hollow and the applause, if any, is quite subdued. We shudder inwardly at the memory of last year's depredations and fear his growing strength, while the old one sits doddering in his corner, apparently capable no longer of ruling.
