To stand below Swift Dam and watch whitecaps breaking over the top, after these years of drought, is an awesome experience. For anyone who lived here in 1964 it is also a chilling one. As schoolchildren, our annual spring field trip was always here, to watch the rebuilding of the dam, to listen to the confident explanations of the engineers; the curved structure mimicking the extraordinary resistance of an eggshell to pressure from the ends, the marvelous strength of concrete and rebar. Still, you cannot stand here for long without a chill going up your spine, without wondering: Was that a cracking sound? There, above the roar - listen!
