What's the Birds-eye Lowdown on this Caper?

Somebody who knows meteorology needs to explain to us these standing waves extending far to the west of the Rockies, crashing into the huge roller breaking on the plains just over the Divide. Unfortunately, I did not have the digi-cam this morning to provide you the ground-truth of this satellite image. The black streak paralleling the Rockies to the east, before the wave-crest, presented itself as a long narrow patch of blue sky, from northwestern horizon to southeastern.
