I think the artist called this "Alpine Sight and Smell". (Well, maybe it was Sight and Sound, but who is gonna quibble?)
Today, you could have seen a smudgy greyish pall, with the wondrous aroma of ashy brown air, and the background sounds of dry leaves rattling in the tubercular wind. Punctuated perhaps by an occasional cutthroat trout flopping in the dust of the streambed.
